Ethiopia is widely regarded as the birthplace of coffee. Legend tells of a young goatherd who noticed his goats became unusually energetic after eating certain red berries, coffee cherries. From around 300 AD until the 15th century, coffee was consumed differently than it is today, with hot water poured directly over the whole berries. It wasn’t until the 1400s that people began roasting the beans, unlocking the rich flavor we know and love today. Café du Jour’s Ethiopian beans are roasted in small batches by a specialist roaster.
